Level III Neonatal Intensive Care
Advanced Care for Our Tiniest Patients A new level of neonatal intensive care became available to residents of Palm Beach County with the opening of Wellington Regional's Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in January 2009. The hospital's expansion to Level III services, the highest level available in the state of Florida, represents our continued commitment to providing specialized care for newborns, first demonstrated at Wellington with the opening of a 10-bed Level II NICU in 2002.
Now, we are prepared to attend to some of the highest risk pregnancies, as well as the sickest and tiniest of babies. The beautiful 15,000 square-foot, 25-bed NICU is now open, providing highly advanced technology in an environment unsurpassed in design and comfort.
Although most new parents are able to bring their newborns home when they leave the hospital, some infants require additional medical care and may need to remain in the NICU for days or even weeks. A Level III Unit cares for the widest range of newborn conditions, from the most unstable babies to those born with the lowest birth weights. In addition to respiratory and infectious conditions commonly seen in a neonatal unit, Level III Nurseries also attend to specialized surgical, cardiac and neurological conditions.
The population growth in the areas served by Wellington Regional, and the increased number of deliveries at the hospital, spurred the decision to expand to Level III services following a thorough review and approval by the state of Florida.
"The expansion to provide Level III neonatal intensive care services has been an important project for the hospital and for the community," says Kevin DiLallo, the hospital's CEO. "We want our local residents to have access to this high level of newborn care close to home during this special time in their lives."
Wellington Regional continues to increase its staff of specialized NICU nurses and respiratory therapists, along with support from the departments of radiology, laboratory and pharmacy.
Neonatologists—physicians trained in the care of the sickest and smallest newborns—staff the unit 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
About the Neonatologists
The Pediatrix Medical Group
Neonatologists practicing at The Centre for Family Beginnings at Wellington are members of Pediatrix Medical Group, considered by many to be the nation's leading provider of maternal-fetal, newborn and pediatric subspecialty physician services. The group consists of 12 neonatologists that serve the greater Palm Beach county area.
Pediatrix clinicians focus on continually improving patient care and participating in ongoing research and quality improvement programs to enhance outcomes nationwide.
The field of neonatal medicine has made a great deal of progress in its ability to care for premature babies. Thanks to advances in technology, new and improved drugs and professional experience, neonatologists are now able to better care for the smallest of infants.
The physicians of Pediatrix Medical Group, along with the staff of Wellington Regional Medical Center, are honored to work with the medical community of Palm Beach county to offer advanced care to sick and premature infants. By working together, we can make a difference in caring for future generations.
Physicians are independent practitioners who are not employees or agents of the hospital.
